The Dual-Tone runs on a pair of 6973 power tubes that are dynamic and versatile, breaking up with ease and cleaning up nicely depending on pick attack and the position of your guitar’s volume control. With plenty of volume for small gigs and a rich tone palette available at reasonable volume levels, the Supro 1624T Dual-Tone is a must for any amp enthusiasts collection. Great for home use and studio recording as well, the Supro 1624T Dual-Tone is capable of a mind-boggling array of sonic variations. Use the Dual-Tone’s second input more headroom and cleaner settings. The magic happens when you plug into the Dual-Tone’s first input, which links the amp’s two channels together, each with their own independent volume and tone controls. (Think double the input signal and double the gain). Twist the knobs a bit and you’ll get it.

This 24-Watt, 1×12 tube combo can easily be driven to glorious saturation at a manageable gigging volume while retaining exceptional clarity and bandwidth, at any level of gain. This amp’s unique mojo is largely defined by the use of 6973 power tubes in the amplifier’s output stage. These robust 9-pin tubes were employed extensively in the mid- and low-power Supro amps made 50 years ago. 6973 tubes look like EL84s but they deliver a distinctly American voice that has been missing from the world of tube amplifiers for far too long.

The Supro 1624T is often referred to as the “Page” amp, because the modified 1962 Supro 1690T Coronado that Jimmy Page used to record the first two Led Zeppelin albums, as well as the solo for Stairway to Heaven from Led Zeppelin IV, had the same specs. The 12” speaker Jimmy installed in his 1690T, along with the 6973 power section effectively made them the same amp. Plugging a Telecaster into the new Supro 1624T Dual-Tone reissue is absolutely the most authentic path to achieving that epic tone found on those first two Led Zeppelin records.

Supro’s roots can be traced back to the Valco company which manufactured amps and guitars under a variety of brand names, including; Airline, Oahu, National, Gretsch, Harmony, and Kay. It was during this time that Valco also began producing guitars and amplifiers under the Supro name. Extremely popular amongst Southside Chicago blues musicians in the 1960’s, Supro amplifiers proved equally popular with the British musicians who were influenced by them. By the late 1960’s, notable guitarists from Jimi Hendrix to Albert Lee to Jimmy Page could be seen playing their Supro amplifiers. Nowadays, original Supro amps are highly sought after and often sell for premium prices on the used market because of their legendary and unique tone.
