My favorite version of the Maz 18 Jr from Dr. Z Amps is equipped with the Celestion Alnico Blue Bell speaker to deliver rich singing tones from single coil pickups and sweet British crunch from humbuckers. It’s rockin’, classic tube amplifier tone has an old school attitude that comes alive under your fingers. Dial in tones ranging from clean chime to raw vintage drive.
Originally designed as a “grab-and-go” studio and small club amp, the Maz 18 Jr has made its way to some of the largest stages in the country. Don’t confuse “18 Watts” with “weak and flabby”. This version of the Maz 18 with it’s Celestion Blue Alnico 12″ speaker will amaze you with its classic, Vox-inspired character and warm, sweet mids… It’s an all tube guitar amplifier with plenty of power from a single 12″ speaker, but can easily provide an even bigger sound with external cabinets as well. Need to keep the volume down for smaller rooms or recording? Try the Maz 18 Jr with a Brake Lite Attenuator. It’s a great option to get the amp working around your sweet spot, rather than the other way around. On its own, the Maz Jr is great on smaller stages. Got a larger venue? Mic the Maz 18 and play away, because big amp tone and soul is all there. This is also a great choice for jazz guitarists looking for an amp with enough complexity for fusion.
The Maz 18 Jr from Dr. Z Amps is a boutique tube guitar amplifier that every Strat or Tele player will love- But it’s not just for single coil players. Humbuckers are right at home with the Maz 18 too. You get great drive sounds at higher volumes or the ability to use the Lo input for cleaner, classic Jazz-style humbucking tone. With a master volume and full EQ there is plenty of room for dialing in your desired tone. The “Cut” knob may be the most useful and versatile tone shaping tool on any guitar amp. Throughout its range, it produces a large variety of sounds to satisfy players using all guitars for most every style of music. The “Cut” knob is best used after the EQ is all set; turn it up for extra edge, turn it down for a more vintage sound.
The Dr Z Maz 18 has the perfect combination of front end drive and output tube distortion. With the Celestion Alnico speaker option, the Maz Jr retains that wonderful 3D reverb clean tone and the sweet top end response, but adds a rich, warm, papery mid-range reminiscent of those great vintage VOX AC 15’s and 30’s. It’s no wonder the Maz 18 is the most popular selling Dr Z reverb combo.
The front panel features Volume, Treble, Middle, Bass, Reverb, Master, and the ever versatile Cut control. Think of the Cut as a tone knob for the output tubes. The back panel features a 4,8, and 16 ohm speaker outputs. An Effects Loop and foot switchable EQ bypass function is also standard. The foot switchable EQ bypass basically works as a stellar lead boost which effectively makes the Maz Jr 18 1×12 combo into a 2 channel amp. A pair of cathode biased EL84 power tubes provide the heart of this amplifier, while three 12AX7 preamp tubes voice the front end. A 5AR4 rectifier tube is also standard. With 18 watts of pure, boutique tube amp tone at your fingertips, the Maz 18 Jr 1×12 combo delivers the perfect blend of front end grind and output tube sustain.
