Incredible Vintage Marshall Plexi Tone!
You won’t find a whole lot of information about these things out there. I’ve tried. But I can tell you this has long been one of my absolute favorite vintage tube guitar amplifiers. It sounds fantastic. It looks like a cheap microwave oven from the early 70’s. Personally, I love that. But it’s time for me to move some of my more obscure vintage pieces. CMI stands for Cleartone Musical Instruments and it’s a company Jim Marshall came up with to get out of some Marshall distribution deal he had with Rose Morris. I believe these were actually made by Marshall. The circuit is basically a vintage JTM-45 with a Solid State Rectifier. There are 2x EL-34’s power the thing and it sounds like god. This particular amp is serial number 002! From what I have been told serial number 001 is in the Marshall museum.
If you are looking for that DIMED, Vintage Marshall Plexi amp tone then look no further. This amp delivers gnarly, snarling, hairy, sputtery, buttery tone! It’s loud but not unreasonably (actually it’s pretty loud- I just played it again and my ears a little fatigued as I type this), and this amp could easily be gigged and cranked while operating within your sweet spot. It pairs well with a number of different cabinets. Pretty much everything I have ever plugged it into sounded great. Old Greenback Celestions and Fanes in particular.
I bought this from an amp / pedal guy who had serviced it and made sure everything was up to snuff. As far as I am aware it’s all stock (maybe some changed caps and tubes, and it does have a US 3-prong cord). That’s about all I know other than it works and sounds great. I am not claiming to be an expert. Sold As-Is. What you see is what you get.
